Sears Counts on Wishes

Sears granted wishes this holiday season with a sweepstakes.Running through Dec. 11, the sweeps awarded one grand-prize winnera $20,000 package to help fulfill one of the following "wishes":a "Craftsman NASCAR" package including a trip for four to a2008 NASCAR Nextel Cup race with VIP garage tour, driver meet andgreet, Craftsman/NASCAR apparel and $10,000 in Craftsman tools;a personal makeover with fitness equipment, athletic apparel, spapackage, makeup and jewelry;a backyard barbeque prize consisting of $7,500 cash and $12,500 inSears gift cards to conduct "new landscaping" and purchase Kenmoregrilling products;a home improvement package featuring an in-home consultation withABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition host Ty Pennington and$20,000 in Sears gift cards for "fashions, electronics andappliances";a home theater package featuring a trip to see a film premiere inCannes, France, along with $9,000 in Sears gift cards for electronics.Secondary prizes consist of Sears gift cards. The grand-prize winnerwill be announced Dec. 23 on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,for which Sears is lead sponsor. In stores, table displays withtearpad take-ones promote the sweeps.The tearpad forms also provide details about the retailer's "Wishing Hours," specific weekly time periods during which shoppers get prices "you could only wish for." Wishing hours are Mondays and Tuesdays, 4 p.m. until closing in stores and 4 p.m. until midnight online. The program runs through Dec. 18.The Wishing Hours sales and sweeps are components of Sears' integrated holiday campaign, which focuses on the revival of the chain's "Wish Book." Last published 14 years ago as an 832-page catalog for the holiday season, the revamped book is now a streamlined 188 pages.Carrying the tagline "Don't just give a gift, grant a wish," the holiday campaign plays out through in-store signage, circulars, TV and radio spots, print ads and online. In other holiday activity, Sears is using lobby displays to collect money for its "Heroes at Home" partnership with non-profit Rebuilding Together. The joint program assists military families facing hardship. The displays carry handouts explaining the cause to shoppers.Sears Holdings Corp., Hoffman Estates, IL, operates 2,058 Sears and 1,387 Kmart stores nationwide.
