Target Finds a Chief Merchandiser

Target named Nordstrom executive Mark Tritton as its chief merchandising officer, concluding a 10-month search.Tritton will oversee enterprise buying, product design and development, sourcing, visual merchandising strategy, and merchandising transformation and operations.Target also promoted Jason Goldberger to the newly created role of chief digital officer and president of target.com. He will be responsible for enhancing Target’s digital experiences and developing new digital capabilities. Both Tritton and Goldberger will report to chief executive officer Brian Cornell, effective June 5.“Over the past year, we’ve undergone an exhaustive search for a chief merchant, and I’m confident that [Tritton’s] experience and passion make him the right fit for Target’s business and our team,” Cornell said in a post on the retailer’s online magazine, A Bullseye View.The cmo position was left vacant when Kathee Tesija and Target parted ways last June as Cornell made sweeping changes to reposition the business.Tritton was hired away from Nordstrom, where he was evp and president of Nordstrom Product Group, overseeing merchandising, design, manufacturing, marketing and omnichannel distribution of more than 50 private label brands. He is credited with leading his team to double Nordstrom's private-label business and creating distinct brand assets, as well as establishing an integrated approach to stores and digital merchandising. Previously, Tritton held leadership positions at Timberland and Nike. Goldberger joined Target in 2013 and was named president of target.com and mobile in 2014, contributing to the significant gains the retailer has made in its online and mobile businesses. Before that, he held leadership positions with online retailers including Gilt Groupe, Hayneedle.com and Amazon.
