Retailers Go Ape for 'Kong'

Retailers are promoting the March 28 DVD release of Universal Studios' King Kong with various offers. Promotions include:Shoppers who purchase the DVD at Wal-Mart receive an exclusive The Making of King Kong collector's book. Target offers a free exclusive King Kong comic with purchase. Best Buy gives heavy support to the DVD in its March 26 circular, including an offer for free Nestle products (an official partner of the DVD release) with purchase. The chain also offers $20 off Toshiba DVD players and $10 off Kodak digital cameras or printer docks with purchase. Circuit City offers a king-size Nestle bar with the DVD. Kroger Co.'s Ralphs offers free Pop-Tarts and Rice Krispies Treats from Kellogg (also an official partner). Sister chain Smith's Food & Drug chain offers three Nestle king-sized bars. Safeway offers free 12-packs of Dr Pepper/Seven Up products and Kellogg's Keebler Fudge Shoppe cookies with purchase.The release gained feature support in March 26 circulars from numerous other retailers, including Pathmark, Meijer, Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS, Eckerd/Brooks Ahold USA's Stop & Shop and Tops, and CompUSA. Promotional activity being conducted by the film's official tie-in partners includes:Glad Products Co. is rolling out Force Flex displays that offer $3 off the combined purchase of the DVD and two products.Packaging for limited-edition Hostess' Banana Twinkies and Banana Nut Mini Muffins feature King Kong graphics. The company also is hosting a sweepstakes awarding a grand-prize trip to Universal Studios in either Orlando, FL, or Hollywood, CA. Secondary prizes include Ubisoft's King Kong video game for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance, DVDs and apparel. Entry is on Hostess' web site. The sweeps runs through May 16. Shippers support at retail.Displays for ConAgra Foods' Orville Redenbacher carry a $5 rebate for the DVD.Kodak is hosting a King Kong Smiles contest that asks entrants to submit photos of great smiles to a promotional web site. One grand-prize winner receives a trip to New York City for a helicopter tour and Broadway show. Secondary prizes include Sony PlayStation 2 consoles and Ubisoft's King Kong video game, DVDs and posters. The contest ends May 9.
