Dominick's Tries Out a Savings App

Dominick’s recently became the testing ground for Safeway’s first mobile application.Focused on savings and designed for iPhones, the new Dominick’s app syncs with a user's loyalty card, letting her view and upload available offers such as coupons, weekly specials and personalized "Just for U" deals. (See Related Articles.) Beyond providing mobile-phone access to the various offers, the app also marks the first time that cardholders can peruse them collectively. (The chain's website has distinct areas for all three.) Operated by San Francisco-based 5th Finger, the app also contains the requisite store locator. Items on special can be added to a shopping list that can be viewed and modified across multiple Apple devices, although the app is incompatible with personal computers.It also currently doesn't provide access to Dominick's' "Deal Match" program. But such updates, as well as expansion to other chains and additional mobile platforms, are likely.Dominick’s has been plugging the app on the front page of circulars since its launch in early November. The circular features, as well as in-store stanchion signs, carry QR codes linking to the app in the online iPhone app store. Window signs, ads on the chain's home page, and display ads that appear when iPhone users view the mobile-optimized version of the chain's website also support.A few days after launching the Dominick's-specific app, Safeway introduced a company-wide "Safeway Chef Assistant" iPhone app.
