Amazon Vet to Transform Target's Supply Chain

Target named a seasoned veteran from rival Amazon to the position of executive vice president, chief supply chain and logistics officer.Effective March 28, Arthur Valdez will lead the retailer’s supply chain transformation, including planning, distribution and transportation, as the company evolves to deal with the additional pressure of online orders. He will report to evp and chief operations officer John Mulligan.“While we’ve made significant progress in improving our operations, Target’s growth hinges on our ability to enhance the fundamental aspects of our business, starting with the supply chain,” Mulligan said in a media release. “[Valdez’s] leadership and experience will be a tremendous asset as we continue to drive improvements in end-to-end processes including leveraging our almost 1,800 stores to deliver a seamless experience for our guests.”Amazon ran Target's e-commerce operation for 10 years in a partnership that ended in 2011.Valdez has 16 years of experience in leadership positions with Amazon, which ran Target's e-commerce operation for 10 years. He most recently served as the company’s vp of operations focused on international supply chain expansion. He also held leadership roles across the company’s global and domestic supply chain, including transportation, fulfillment and logistics. During his more than 20 years in retail, Valdez additionally worked for Walmart and Kmart.Valdez will replace Keri Jones, who — following a transition phase — will leave the company after more than two decades.In other moves to improve supply chain and in-stocks, Target last fall also hired Anu Gupta to the new position of svp of operational excellence.
