Target tied in to the Dec. 20, 2019, theatrical release of Walt Disney Co.'s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker by stocking exclusive licensed merchandise and staging an in-store promotional event.

The event was held on Dec. 7 at select Target stores, where shoppers were treated to Star Wars-themed treats and giveaways from Funko and Lego Group. A Dec. 5, 2019, post on the retailer's "A Bullseye View" blog supported. 

An exclusive Star Wars D-O interactive droid rolled out alongside other licensed SKUs on the Oct. 4 observation of "Triple Force Friday," the official launch day for new products from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Disney's The Mandalorian web television series and Electronic Arts' Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order video game. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker licensed SKUs got the spotlight in stores via an interactive endcap outfitted with signage depicting characters from the film and their respective light sabers, which lit up if shoppers placed their hands over specific areas of the display. (The retailer had also erected a similar display for Disney's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.) 

Further drumming up support for this latest Star Wars film, Stormtroopers were on hand to celebrate the opening of a Disney Store within Target's Maple Grove, MN, location.

Other notable retailer tie-ins to the film's release included: 

  • the roll out of a "Skywalker Saga Commemorative Limited-Edition" line of toys exclusively at Walmart.
  • Oct. 5 in-store events at five of Kroger's Fred Meyer locations offering shoppers photo opportunities with Stormtroopers and product giveaways. 
  • limited-edition Hasbro figures that were only available via the Amazon Treasure Truck on Oct. 4.
