Staples Prints in 3D

Staples recently began offering 3D printing services through a microsite on its website.Powered by French company Sculpteo, the microsite (3dservices.staples.com) lets users upload a 3D file or select from a curated assortment of models to customize and order online. Users can choose the color and materials of their 3D project as well as add text, figures and images. Printable materials include plastic, metal and alumide.“This is a great addition for our business customers that are looking for an easy way to prototype with quick turnaround time, and at an affordable price,” Behzad Soltani, Staples’ vice president of services, e-commerce, said in a media release. “The platform allows beginners to get a taste and try 3D printing by selecting one of our existing models and making it their own through our customization options.”The office supply chain has gradually expanded its 3D printing offerings since May of 2013, when it announced it be would be the first major U.S. retailer to carry 3D printers. The retailer has since rolled out 3D printing hardware and accessories in a limited number of stores and grown its overall product selection to include MakerBot 3D printers. In-store 3D printing services are also offered in New York City and Los Angeles pilot stores as well as some 50 additional locations supported by Stratasys, MakerBot’s parent company. Staples is not the only retailer testing 3D printing services. In May, Lowe’s began offering 3D printing services at its Mountain View, CA, Orchard Supply Hardware location and on osh.com.
