Jewel-Osco is Pumped for Gas Rewards

Albertsons Cos.' steady expansion of Gas Rewards has brought the program to Jewel-Osco through a partnership with Royal Dutch Shell. The chain is pulling out all the stops to promote the offering across 175 participating stores in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana markets. In stores, violators, standees and window clings depicting Shell’s logo tout the program, which lets shoppers earn up to 20 cents off per gallon of gas through grocery, gift card and pharmacy purchases. The rewards are redeemable at over 400 participating gas stations.Supporting signs and banners are also deployed in store parking lots, and at Shell gas stations. For a brief period in January, store employees sported promotional Gas Rewards t-shirts.Online, Facebook and Twitter updates plug the program while promoting offers such as four times the Gas Rewards points with purchases of gift cards and floral items in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Run-of-press ads in the Chicago Tribune, outdoor ads, radio spots, seeded blog posts, sponsored Google search results and features in the retailer’s circulars support.Gas Rewards launched at Jewel-Osco last fall. An email blast from the retailer on Oct. 20, 2016, introduced the program as “Easy to Earn, Easy to Use” and explained how to sign up on jewelosco.com or through the MyMixx mobile application. Email blasts and ads to subscribers, as well as home page carousel ads on its website continue to promote the partnership.The launch at Jewel-Osco occurred around the same time Albertsons expanded the Gas Rewards program to 120 additional Safeway stores and 200 gas stations on the East Coast through a new partnership with Sunoco LP. The retailer also extended its existing partnership with Chevron to its namesake banner and Tom Thumb stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.In 2012, then under ownership of SuperValu, Jewel-Osco offered shoppers “fuel rewards” at Shell stations through the retailer’s since-discontinued loyalty program.
